And the army went forth from their caves deep under the bottoms of the lakes and overtook the wide world: they rushed out over the plains and overtook the plains; they rushed out over the valleys and overtook the valleys, they rushed through the cities and took them over: every corner of the earth they took over and conquered. They covered everything over with a strange ectoplasm that burned the skin, and everyone cowered in small corners of rooms and under beds and tables and sang: "All is lost, we are finished; there is nothing left for us; if only we could leave sons or daughters behind to mourn for us."
