Enter the Parsee. This is a disease; it overtakes the nervous system. This is the deep sickness, the terror, the fear of water and the burning sickness. The deep sickness is wild; the deep sickness burns; the deep sickness locks the sufferer up into his mind, surrounds him with nothing but mind things, makes his mind a terror to him, makes him boil and stir with the stuff of mind. How was that bull’s head hung? With bloody horns and frothy snout? Where are your eyes and your magic weapons? What is this terrible river, this river filled with sickness and crazy beasts, this river filled with instinct and hungry mouths ready to eat us all? O is there no pure water left on the face of the earth? Has everything been turned into great hungry mouths bent upon swallowing us up?
