In the beginning, God said of him, "We shall give him a bit of terror," and so it was done; and God said of him, "We shall give him a bit of agony," and so it was done; and God said of him, "We shall give him a bit of bliss," and so it was done; but God said of him, "We shall give him no love," and so he was given no love; and then God said of him, "We shall make him of a thousand parts, and each part shall be cut off from every other, and no part shall communicate with any other part, and thus he shall be broken." And thus he was broken. For he was made of chess pieces each with its own mind, and each unable to see the entire board, each blind to the whole of the board and moving with its own mind; and thus he was expected to play chess like this; and so it is no wonder that he failed in life, constituted the way he was.
