These creatures are bundles of human heads, human arms, human hands, human legs and feet; these appendages are placed randomly throughout, and no part works in accord with any other part; every part has a life of its own and a will of its own. A man with all his parts well ordered has majesty--with each part working for the good of the whole and everything in perfect health and balance. But these creatures are not human, though they are made of human parts--for they have a head coming out of the chest and another coming out of the small of the back, hands coming out of the ankles and feet where the head should be--they are bundles of human parts, and each part has a life of its own and a will of its own. Sometimes these creatures are round; sometimes cubic; sometimes oblong. For a voice came down out of the clouds before I was baptized, and said, "Do not be baptized, my child, for thou art their leader," and I knew I was the leader of these creatures. They fall from the skies in heavy rains or rise up out of the earth during earthquakes; they are washed in from the sea during storms and condense on windows during humid weather. I am their leader and I speak for them (I say what they wish me to say, nothing more or less). They are a thousand parts all working discordantly, and no part can communicate with any other part. My body is made of them and my soul is made of their souls. We are one together, and so very unhappy together.
