Legal impossibility is put into the air, and we breathe it, and it makes us believe things. It makes us believe strange things, and our beliefs are true and not true (this is the essence of the impossible). Thus we are cast into the world of the impossible, where we are human and not human, telepaths and not telepaths, messiahs and not messiahs. We are incapable of suffering and all we do is suffer: this is what legal impossibility has reduced us to. We are the dogs. We shit in the alleyway and masturbate behind the dumpster. For the world genetically engineers each human being so that he won’t suffer any sort of pain, so that she won’t be able to suffer. Thus we are all smiling and happy, for we have been given genes of happiness: we are all alike happy, there is nothing else for us. And everyone is given a measure and a portion of pleasantness, and machines that give pleasure; thus we are the Smiling Nation, every one of us smiling and content in our toil, smiling and content within the System, each one of us harmony for the System. For the System was yeast of much suffering and unhappiness, and so the System said, "We shall genetically engineer the people, so that they are pleasantly unconscious, and incapable of feeling any depression or pain or anguish at life." And thus the people were put into a false world with false minds, and the people smiled and said, "Life is delightful, my job is delightful; I am delighted at my alarm clock, I am delighted at the traffic." And thus the people were delighted, and the System said, "Now the people are put into a pleasant sleep, and each is a harmony within the System, and they shall not make revolution against us." But there were some who said, "I wish to see truth, and if truth makes me suffer, so be it." And so the System gave them no benefit from itself, and these are the homeless wanderers who suffer and suffer; though their eyes see truth. The truth anguishes them, life is a torment to them; but they have the deeper satisfaction and contentment of living in the real world, of seeing the anguishing thing that the world really is. Thus they are heroes and warriors, fighting to wake up the people; but the people despise them, and say, "They choose to live like that." And indeed this is true: they have chosen the noble life of truth, while the people smile false smiles, and take pills for their melancholy, and alter their genes so that they will adore their alarm clocks and the traffic.
