The System is poison for the people. For the people are made and constructed to live free of any System, and the System in which each is forced to be a harmony causes them anguish. The System by its very nature causes the people anguish, but they cannot identify the problem; for the people are blinded by the System, and most would deny the very existence of the System. The people do not know there is a System; but they are anguished and depressed by the System, and do not know why they are anguished and depressed. This is a problem for the System: for if the people were ever made aware of what anguishes them, they would make revolution against the System, and destroy it, so that it would no longer live and rule the human race. And the System cannot correct itself so that the people aren’t unhappy with it, for by its very nature and existence it anguishes the people. So the System alters the people so that they will not be unhappy and anguished: it alters the people’s genes and gives them pills for their melancholy. Thus the people’s genes are altered so that they are incapable of seeing truth, and being anguished by truth. And so the System has accomplished everything: the very bodies and minds of the people—their very genes—are shaped and formed such that they fall into harmony with the System. And the System says to itself, "Soul, certainly there is nothing that can end your rule over the people now: for you have rendered them incapable of seeing truth, or feeling unhappiness with you; and indeed only one in a hundred of them even knows you exist."
