JSR: Why could not God create only good souls, so that all would be in the bliss of the heavens, and there would be no worlds of suffering?

Ezekiel: Can you not see the simplest facts? The heroin addict experiences bliss you cannot comprehend, but because of the bliss suffers agony you do not know. The manic-depressive experiences bliss by virtue of his agony, her agony; and agony by virtue of his bliss, her bliss. Whenever one exists, it must correspond to the other. For each soul in the heavens with a degree of happiness, there must by necessity be a soul in hell suffering corresponding agony. And those enlightened ones in the heavens say, "If it weren’t for our bliss, they would not suffer; if it weren’t for their suffering, we could not enjoy this bliss. But God has seen to it that each of them suffers only what he deserves, what she deserves; and we can enjoy only what we deserve, nothing more, nothing less; so indeed this cosmos is just."

Most souls in this world will fear hell more than they desire the heavens, for all here have had more suffering than bliss, and having had a taste of it they only want to flee worse pain. But there is just as much reason to desire the heavens as there is to escape hell, for in the heavens there are blessings we cannot comprehend, and happiness we cannot understand. There is nothing it lacks, no one can ever grow tired of it; it never gets monotonous or boring; it is not like sexual or drug-induced ecstasy that merely titillates the senses, but bliss deeper and longer-lasting, a taste of which in this world is a daughter’s wedding, or a reunion with a son, or having a loving father or mother to support one in any distress. But no matter how deep our happiness in this realm, it can always get better and better, though the ones in these high heaven worlds say, "Nothing can be better than this." And if one were to tell them of a world a billion times better, they would say, "I cannot comprehend such a thing; I am happy where I am; but if you say this place exists, I will certainly try to see it for myself."
