We say of the 1800s, "Those were olden times—they have nothing to do at all with our times." And thus the times are cut off from the times, and by the time I am an old man I will wander this very city as an alien in an alien land, and I will say, "My homeland is destroyed—it is no more, and will never be again." Once, I was in the car with my grandfather, in the city on a congested street, and he said to me, "This used to be a dirt road." He was a teenager in this city in the 1920s. He’s dead now. And thus this all runs out of control, until we are all aliens in the land, even at 30 years old. I am a young man—I am 29 years old—already this city is a very different place than in my youth, already I do not have a cell phone, DVD player, all the gadgets and things I see people using. I know that were I simply to live how I live now for another 20 years, without changing anything, I will be an alien in the land, and my homeland will have been destroyed.
