You could spend months on it, you could spend years on it, you could spend decades on it, and you would only be touching its surface. It is the what-is-hidden; it is the what-is-obvious; it is the city and its systemic functioning; it is the Many that is One. I thought I had laid bare what was mysterious; I thought I had descended to the depths; I thought I had revealed what was obscure and seen what no human eye has seen. But I had only seen a little glimmer on the superficial surface of the thing. It is frightening; it is powerful; there is no human being that directs it; there is no human being that can go up against it. Every move to resist it causes anguish in the resistor, and only feeds into its power. They have machines; they torment me with machines. For in my youth I said, "Death is the ultimate mystery, the goal of all things, the final state; and before I die I will understand death." But this was only foolishness. Now I see that death does not exist, that if something exists it must be living; and we can say nothing of death or the dead, for these are all darkness and void, and do not exist. Since death is nothing at all, if something exists, it is living; we can say nothing of death, just as we can say nothing of anything that does not exist. Life is the ultimate mystery, the state of everything that is, the only thing in the cosmos that exists; and I have not even begun to understand life, and if I started now it would take me ten thousand years to do so.
