What Shall We Make?

What shall we make?

We shall make a house.

Yes! Yes, and what kind of house?

And old and rundown house.

Yes. And what is in it?

There shall be first of all a living room and kitchen. In the living room we shall put an untidy suit lain out on the floor. The kitchen shall be full of feces and urine.

And what shall be upstairs?

Upstairs we shall put four rooms.

What is in the first room?

In the first room there is a giant, erect, living penis.

Yes! And what else?

Phallic idols. For worship. We shall have incense burning, and an altar with candles.

And what else?

Stained glass windows, with portraits of rockets, obelisks, towers, and other such suggestive things.

And what shall be in the second room?

In the second room we shall have a great mouth, with gnashing teeth.

And what are the teeth like?

They shall be sharp--like those of a wolf or shark.

And what shall the lips of the mouth be like?

They shall be full of hair--it shall be a hairy beast of a thing.

And the next room? What is in that?

In that we shall place the beetles. There shall be a swarm of beetles infesting it. They shall dart from here to there in complete unconsciousness and stupidity. They shall not act in accord, but run about mindlessly, unaware of one another.

And the center of the room? What shall be there?

Why, a giant brain. The beetles shall infest it inside out. The beetles shall be running about inside the brain--but they shall not devour it.

Why not?

Because it is their nest, of course.

And the last room? What is in the last room?

A hermaphrodite. It shall be split straight down the middle: one half male, the other female. There shall be a thin wall of concrete separating the halves. They shall each see the other as an alien person--yet they shall not be two but one.

And what shall the outside of the house look like? What shall be its character and place in the neighborhood?

It shall be in a rundown suburb, outside the city but poor all the same. Our house shall be vacant and haunted. No one shall enter it ever, for fear of ghosts and weak flooring. They shall curse the house to ruin. Its yard shall grow unkempt, and its paint shall be peeling.

No one will ever go and visit our house?

No.

No one at all?

Never.

Why? Why? Why? Why?

Never! Never! Never!

I don't like what we made. I don't like it at all.
