My father came over tonight. We went through all the business we had to, having to do with the predated checks I was going to send out for him at the beginning of each month, the mail he had gotten, the predated checks he was going to write to me, etc. He has no address, you see, and so I get all his mail and go through it for him. He and his wife are worth probably a million and three quarters together; but he likes to travel, coming into town only for certain periods; and so he has no permanent address. He takes it as a matter of pride, and likes to tell me about it every time someone suggests to him that he should get a house. "She said, 'You should get a house. Everyone needs a house.' I told her, 'No they don't: I'm a nomad, and I'll always be a nomad.' " He is very proud that he has no permanent residence, and often refers to himself as "homeless". He basically finds volunteer jobs in backcountry parks or foreign countries, and lives off the room and board these jobs provide. He has always been frugal like that. When he lived in a three-bedroom townhouse as I was growing up, though he owned 7 houses and condos in all, and rented them out, he always had a roommate, sometimes two. "My wife is getting to where she wants a house," he said to me a few months ago. "It's just what women want. Women want a house. I think she'll get over it once we're in the backcountry again."
