My brother and I couldn't be more different. He suffers anxiety about everything he puts into his body. He's not a health nut because it makes him feel good: he's a health nut out of terror, peeling apples if they are not organic because of the pesticides that he considers as sinister as plutonium, brushing his teeth with non-fluoride toothpaste because "Fluoride gives you cancer," refusing to drink water that has not been filtered twice and had charcoal soaking in it. He doesn't believe in the medications and drugs they prescribe in this country, but prefers the herbal treatments of Chinese medicine. He lived in Japan with his Japanese wife several years, but that can't be where they picked up such practices: Japan is just as chemical-fed as the US. He rarely eats meat because "meat farms harm the environment," and whenever he breaks down and eats the pork he so loves, it makes him feel depressed and guilty, because he has harmed the environment. "Do you know how pork farms work?" he said once. "Those pigs are constantly shitting, so they pump it all through pipes out to dry lakebeds, and it makes a whole lake of shit. Once it is full, they fill another, leaving the first lake of shit to condemnation. They tie up the sows and let the hogs fuck them, keep them tied until they give birth, and then slaughter the poor things." I don't know where he gets this stuff. "The cows are worse," he said. "They keep them locked in pens all their lives, so that the pens fill up with shit. It gets all over their bodies and fur--they get covered in it. So when they are slaughtered the meat has shit smeared all over it--and instead of having sanitary conditions they just irradiate the meat, grind it up, and put it under plastic in the stores. And then there's the growth hormones in non-organic milk. It makes six-year-old girls grow breasts--probably even boys. It won't be long till the world is filled with mutants & freaks because of hormones & pesticides, gene modification, irradiation, toxicity."
